Over 30 Cats Rescued from Abandoned Sailor’s Boat Near Tacoma, Washington

A shocking discovery has unfolded off the shores of Owen Beach in Tacoma, Washington, where authorities found an abandoned sailboat harboring more than 30 cats and kittens. The situation was perilous for the animals; officers had to resort to what they called “cat math” to estimate their exact number.

Tacoma Police's Marine Services Unit responded to a report on August 6, 2026, finding dozens of cats living in unsafe conditions. Crews managed to corral 31 cats and kittens by Friday afternoon but struggled to find several more hiding in tight spaces within the boat. The humane efforts were coordinated between the Marine Services Team, Animal Control officers, and Forensic Technicians.
