Alessia Russo, an Arsenal forward, has transformed from a non-fan to an avid supporter. In this exclusive interview, she opens up about her passion for the club and the importance of developing young female players in English football.

During Arsenal's historic double last season, Russo was seen celebrating alongside fans during the 9km parade through north London. 'It was one of my most special days,' she recalls. The celebration highlighted the love and sense of community around the club as they celebrated both successful men’s and women’s teams.

Russo launched her foundation this year to support grassroots female football clubs, advocating for increased funding in a sport that has seen incredible growth over the past few years. 'The risk is that without sustained investment, we might lose talented young players,' she warns, emphasizing the need for continued support at all levels.

Russo highlights the challenges faced by grassroots clubs in securing funding and shares data from surveys that show a significant disparity between male and female teams. According to Starling Bank, nearly every grassroots female club needs more funds, with 76% of players potentially leaving football if no changes are made.

The joy Russo feels comes not just from personal success but also witnessing the community spirit at its best. 'It’s incredible to experience moments like that parade with Lotte Wubben-Moy and Leah Williamson, who are passionate Gooners,' she adds.

How did you become a full Arsenal fan?

I joined the club and saw how much people truly love it. The fans, the atmosphere, all of that made me want to be part of it more and more.

Why is supporting young female players important?

We need to ensure future generations have opportunities in football, not just boys but girls too. Investing early makes a huge difference in nurturing talent.
