Former Adviser Reveals Buhari’s Misgivings About Tinubu in 2023
Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), claims Muhammadu Buhari had reservations about Bola Tinubu's candidacy for the 2023 presidential election. According to Lawal, these reservations were rooted in his religious beliefs and personal ethics.
Speaking with Symfoni TV on Saturday, Lawal explained that despite initial concerns, Buhari eventually agreed to remain neutral, allowing delegates to choose their candidate freely from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He predicts Tinubu’s failure in 2027, instead supporting a joint ticket led by Peter Obi and Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso.
“Buhari is a human, and he’s a decent guy,” Lawal said, explaining that Bola Tinubu brought significant supporters who forced the APC to change its campaign trajectory through their influence. According to him, Buhari found it difficult to openly oppose Tinubu because of his immense contributions to the APC.
“As we were going to the convention, I said, ‘Oga’, let’s make a deal. I said, look, this man (Tinubu), we now know that based on your religion and your ethics and your upbringing, you don’t want to hand over to this man, but he has helped us get here,” Lawal continued.
He added: “We made a deal. Stay neutral and allow me to run the process. If we go to the convention and the party faithful defeat him, so be it. Your hand is not in it.”Frequently Asked Questions
