The bizarre mistake shows how self-checkouts can go awry with new technology.

A Circle K customer in Arizona found their order transformed when an AI-powered checkout mistakenly added a massive $8.5 billion donation to the bill, raising questions about just how reliable these tech-driven kiosks are.

The incident occurred at one of the 7-Eleven-owned convenience stores, which had recently replaced traditional registers with AI-enabled self-checkouts after testing the technology since 2022. According to Circle K's plan, more than 10,000 Mashgin systems will be installed in over 7,000 locations across the country.

According to the customer: “I just wanted a hot dog.” The kiosk had added an enormous donation to their Red Cross account after scanning bottles of Gatorade. The machine also let customers pay by cash or card but did not complete the transaction, leaving confusion for the store employee who was on hand.

Mashgin’s AI and Its Challenges

The Mashgin systems use advanced computer vision to recognize multiple products without needing barcodes. The company claims customers can finish their transactions in as little as 10 seconds, a significant improvement over traditional self-checkouts that take eight times longer.
