FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, has rejected accusations of bias in the 2026 World Cup after Egypt faced a controversial defeat to Argentina on Tuesday. Speaking through FIFA’s official channels, Collina emphasized the integrity and independence of match officials while addressing criticism from Egypt’s football association.
Egypt were upsetly knocked out with a heart-stopping goal by Enzo Fernandez in stoppage time. Head coach Hossam Hassan alleged there might have been pressure to keep Lionel Messi and Argentina's reign alive, leading Egypt's football executive body (Federation of Egyptian Football Associations or EFA) to formally request an investigation into officiating. Collina stated unequivocally that match officials should not be questioned.
