Growing Resistance as Asian Football Confederation Joins CONCACAF and UEFA
Gianni Infantino’s ambitious plan to introduce private investment into FIFA competitions has faced another significant setback, with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) joining other regional groups in expressing serious concerns. In a statement, AFC reaffirmed its solidarity with UEFA and CONCACAF, highlighting their opposition to FIFA’s proposal to sell stocks in the World Cup.
This move marks the third major confederation to oppose Infantino's plan, raising the possibility of a world cup boycott. According to Mirror - Football, this strategic shift is part of a wider effort to challenge FIFA's governance and decision-making processes. “The fact that the situation has reached the point where the real possibility of a FIFA World Cup boycott has entered public discourse should concern everyone who cares about the future of our game,” stated the AFC in its official statement.
With 150 countries now opposing the proposal, Infantino is losing crucial support. The Swiss leader needs over 50% backing for his plan to move forward, and at current rates, it seems unlikely he will meet that threshold.
