Smaller but Still Iconic: Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are poised to break new ground with a stripped-back format and limited sports line-up, yet still promise iconic moments.

This year marks the 96th anniversary of the event. From Roger Bannister's 'Miracle Mile' in 1954 to recent successes like Eilish McColgan breaking her mother’s record, the Games have produced legendary athletic feats. However, Glasgow will host a much smaller and more budget-conscious event.

After Victoria pulled out due to spiraling costs, Glasgow stepped up with only around 2,000 fewer athletes competing across 10 sports, compared to 2014's 18. New stadiums haven't been built, with athletics events transitioning from Hampden Park to Scotstoun Stadium.

Smaller Line-Up But Same Spirit

Katie Sadleir, chief executive of Commonwealth Sport, sees this as a reset and a template for future editions:
