Record-Breaking Scrabble Event Set for Bayelsa

The Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Classic is set to return to Yenagoa, Nigeria, from August 1-2, with a record prize pool of ₦20 million. Organized by the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), this year's event promises intense competition and a chance for players to pocket millions.

New York Times scrabble champion Esi Agada comments on the excitement: “This tournament not only elevates the game but also brings together some of West Africa’s finest wordsmiths.”

The event features five categories, with winners set to walk away with significant cash prizes. The Masters category, which crowns a champion, will see the eventual winner take home ₦2 million – quadrupling what was awarded last year.

Governor Douye Diri’s continued support has brought greater recognition to scrabble in Bayelsa. Daniel Alabrah, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association (BYSA), says, “The governor has significantly boosted our event’s prize fund.”

Beyond financial incentives, Alabrah adds that the Governor Diri Classic is a source of pride and unity for the state: “This championship stands out as one of Africa's premier scrabble competitions. It’s not only about money but also about bringing people together.”

This year, more than 300 players from across Nigeria and the diaspora are expected to participate, making it an event of national significance. With Governor Diri set to attend the closing ceremony at DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa, the tournament promises to be a spectacle of skill and celebration.
