Compromise Sought to Address Top Player Injuries in Tennis

Kyle Edmund, the former British No. 1 tennis player, has called for a compromise between tournaments and players to mitigate frequent injuries like those experienced by high-profile stars such as Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper.

In an exclusive interview with Tennis365, Edmund expressed concern about the absence of key players due to injuries. "It’s not good for the product, the tournaments or fans when our best players are out. We don’t want that [injury] to happen," he commented.

Edmund specifically highlighted top British talent Draper and Raducanu, both 23 and struggling with consistent health issues despite their young careers. The 2018 Australian Open semi-finalist also mentioned other injured players such as Arthur Fils, Lorenzo Musetti, and Victoria Mboko.

‘Compromise’ Urged Between Tour and Players

Edmund suggested that the solution could lie in a compromise where both parties can find a balance. 'Whatever it needs to take to come to a compromise, where the tour is happy for what they need, and players feel like there's more of a balance in everything – I think that would be great,' he stated.

His frustration stems from the financial strain faced by top players when out due to injuries. 'Tennis is such [a] high-pressure job. If you're out, you’re not earning money, losing momentum, and ranking positions.' He added that if they had an answer, a better approach would be in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are top players struggling with injuries?

The exact cause of these frequent injuries remains unclear. 'It’s really hard to say because every player has their own team and management,' Edmund admitted, adding that if they had the solution, current British tennis would be in a better position.

Is compromise the only way forward?

Edmund believes compromising is key but acknowledges it may not suffice. 'It's really hard to tell with all these elements at play, and we do want to try to keep fit as much as possible,' he concluded on his stance.
