Mohsen Rezaee, former IRGC chief, appointed to top security role
Iran has named Mohsen Rezaee, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The appointment was made by President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday.
Rezaee, 71, served as IRGC chief from 1981 to 1997 and is a member of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has designated Rezaee as his personal representative on the council.
- Rezaee also assumes this role in place of Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who previously held positions within both the Security and Expediency Discernment Councils.
The move comes amid continuing tensions in Iran and efforts to maintain regional stability with neighboring countries. President Pezeshkian stated that recent airstrikes against law enforcement officers were a misguided attempt to sow chaos and ethnic tension, emphasizing that all plans had failed. However, communications with regional nations like Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan are improving.
