Kyle Shanahan’s Concussion Changes Perspective on Player Safety in NFL
After suffering a severe concussion, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan now empathizes deeply with players who have dealt with brain injuries. In his recent press conference following an automobile accident on July 11, Shanahan shared how this personal experience has changed his viewpoint.
Shanahan, known for his sympathy towards player safety issues in the past, is now taking a more informed and understanding stance based on his own experiences. “Yeah, no doubt,” he said when asked if this would change his perspective. “I’ve been told so much by these guys, don’t compare a sports concussion to an accident like this.”
Fewer Concussions Go Undetected
The NFL began taking concussions very seriously in 2009 after Congress stepped in. Shanahan’s new understanding may lead him to be more cautious in the future, encouraging players to take their time in recovery rather than returning prematurely.
Less Likelihood of Failing Players
Shanahan also expressed interest in not penalizing players who suffer concussions by losing their spot on the depth chart. This new approach could protect star players from undue strain and ensure they fully recover before resuming play, potentially reducing the frequency of repeat injuries.
