Seven-day ultimatum for resolution of unresolved welfare demands among Lagos State workers
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Lagos State-owned universities has given the state government a seven-day ultimatum to address outstanding welfare demands, threatening an indefinite strike if unresolved. According to ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, staff at Lagos State University, LASU, and other tertiary institutions are demanding implementation of Federal Government agreements reached with major university-based unions.
Bakare explained that despite repeated engagements with government officials, workers in state-owned universities have not received the N50, 000 palliative payment promised for May 1, 2026. The unions believe this is due to unclear communication from authorities and accumulated seven months of unpaid obligations as a result.
Key demands include:- N50, 000 palliative payment
- Promises made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
“We explored every peaceful and reasonable avenue available to us because we believe in dialogue. Unfortunately, our members have become exhausted and can no longer continue to wait while other categories of public servants have received the payment,” he said.
Funding Release for N50, 000 Palliative Payment
The unions are also calling on the state government to release funds for this proposed payment, as civil servants in the state already received it. According to ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, while Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat assured workers that such issues would be addressed, no such steps have been taken yet.
Key Points:- Funding Release for N50, 000 payment
- Unpaid obligations in Lagos State universities
Multifaceted Welfare Issues
The workers' representatives also appealed to the government to address other outstanding welfare issues, including staff buses promised by Governor Sanwo-Olu and resolution of 20% salary-related matters raised during previous negotiations.
Key Demands:- Staff buses implementation
- Resolution of 20% salary increases
