Toys, not cards: McDonald's takes anti-scalper measures for Pikachu-Themed Happy Meals in Japan
McDonald’s is implementing new measures to prevent scalping even as it launches its latest Pokemon-themed Happy Meal collection across Japan. The promotion, part of the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations, includes a variety of toys instead of trading cards.
The collection features 12 toy designs representing all 27 starter Pokemon from nine generations along with Pikachu, Eevee, and Snorlax. Six different toys will be available during the first wave until August 13, after which another six will join circulation from August 14.
According to McDonald’s Japan, customers are limited to six toy-filled Happy Meals per group and transaction between August 7 and August 9.The meals will also remain unavailable through third-party delivery platforms during these three days. Additionally, McDonald's has asked customers not to purchase the Happy Meals for resale or commercial use. The company hopes to reduce demand by discouraging individual restaurant checks on remaining inventory.
Why Are They Taking These Measures?
The measures come in response to past issues with Pokemon card reselling during similar Happy Meal promotions in Japan and elsewhere. In 2025, the promotion involving guaranteed cards sold out within a day, leading to long lines, food abandonment, and scalping concerns.
McDonald’s has been closely monitoring Pokémon card-related issues for years, implementing new rules each time to prevent similar chaos.Frequently Asked Questions
