Nigerian para powerlifting reign continues with Riluwan Idris' victory; team's medal haul reaches six
On Friday night at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow, Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris powered his way to a stunning gold medal in the Men’s Heavyweight para powerlifting event. This victory brings Team Nigeria's medals tally to six after a successful opening day of competition.
The 27-year-old Nigerian athlete delivered an impressive performance, scoring 132.8 points to clinch the Commonwealth title. England’s Matthew Harding settled for silver with 131.0 points, while Malaysia's Nicodemus Manggoi Moses and India’s defending champion Sudhir rounded out the podium.
Team Nigeria's medal run kicks off in Glasgow
In addition to Idris' triumph, Team Nigeria also claimed three silver medals in the opening day of competition. Esther Nworgu won gold with a Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s Lightweight event, Esther Oyema and Roland Ezuruike secured second places respectively in their weight categories.
Targeted success: Nigeria aims 16-20 golds
With three gold medals already under its belt and several other medal events to come, Team Nigeria is on track toward achieving the National Sports Commission's target of between 16 and 20 gold medals. This impressive start has solidified Nigeria as the dominant force in Commonwealth para powerlifting.
