Veteran Center Mike Eric Calls on Nigerian Athletes Abroad to Give Back Home

NIGERIAN athletes living abroad should use their experiences and presence to inspire young Nigerians and promote community development, says assistant captain of the men’s national basketball team D’Tigers, Mike Eric.

Eric, who has spent significant time in the global game and understands the support networks that helped him, believes returning home for mentorship and investment can be profoundly impactful. “Your experience, your time and your presence can inspire young people to believe they can achieve great things,” he added.

According to Eric, athletes from Nigerian descent have a responsibility to contribute beyond their individual achievements on the court. He cites the example of those who benefited from family, coaches, and local communities during formative years now needing to reinvest in these environments.

“No matter where you live or how long you've been away, Nigeria is still home. We all have a responsibility to come back and give something meaningful,” Eric stated.

Supporting Community Projects: Key to Future Development

Under the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) diaspora talent initiative, Mike Eric hopes to see more athletes engage with local communities, fostering a deeper sense of national pride and identity. By investing in youth development and grassroots sports, these projects can unearth the next generation of sporting talents.

The former Temple University standout emphasizes that true success for Nigerian athletes is measured not only by trophies but also by leaving a positive legacy in their home communities.
