Nigerian Navy Seizes MT FILIA Offshore, Cracking Down on Oil Theft in Akwa Ibom State
The Nigerian Navy intercepted a vessel carrying stolen crude worth N660m and arrested 12 suspects as part of Operation Delta Sentinel. The seizure occurred off the coast of Akwa Ibom State on July 23, 2026, according to reporting by Punch Nigeria - Sports.
According to Commodore AA Umar, from the Eastern Naval Command, preliminary investigations revealed that the tanker had been within the vicinity of the offshore terminal for more than seven days. The MT FILIA, which sailed under the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe, was intercepted after it departed the terminal and headed seaward.
“At about 4:00am on July 23, a Nigerian Navy patrol boat intercepted the tanker,” said Umar, adding that “on sighting the Nigerian Navy ship, the crew began discharging the stolen crude oil into the sea, thereby causing maritime pollution.” Investigations revealed that the vessel had loaded approximately 650 metric tonnes of crude estimated to be worth more than N660m.
