Igbo group urges urgent rehabilitation of eastern seaports for economic growth.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to urgently complete the Port Harcourt-Enugu Expressway and Standard Gauge Railway while rehabilitating Calabar, Warri and Port Harcourt seaports. The projects are deemed critical for Nigeria's economic future.
The organisation states that these infrastructure developments have been delayed, hampering growth and increasing costs of doing business in Nigeria. According to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, completing the projects would benefit all parts of the country by boosting trade, improving transportation and strengthening national integration.
Why Are These Projects Important?
The Port Harcourt-Enugu corridor is described as one of the country’s most strategic economic routes. The poor state of the expressway has increased transportation costs, leading to accidents and higher logistics expenses which contribute to rising inflation. By improving this route, travel time can be reduced, safety improved, transport costs lowered, and goods movement facilitated.
Economic Impact of Completed Projects
The projects could generate between ₦3 trillion and ₦5 trillion additional annual economic output within five years. Additionally, they could contribute up to 1.5% to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product growth while creating between 150,000 and 250,000 direct and indirect construction jobs.
Rehabilitation of Eastern Seaports
The group also stresses the importance of rehabilitating and modernizing eastern seaports to reduce dependence on Lagos ports. This would decongest them, lower import and export costs, improve cargo turnaround time, and provide businesses with more direct access.
