New Leadership System Aims at Smooth Transition
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has adopted a new leadership succession model designed to prevent internal disputes during changes in office. The move comes after the sudden death of former president, Francis Johnson, which left a vacuum that challenged PENGASSAN's previous ways of handling transitions.
According to PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo, the new model involves electing a deputy president who will automatically become the president upon stepping down. This change was intended to eliminate intense competition for the office and ensure smoother transfers of power within the association. The amendment was passed unanimously in August 2025.
Inspiration from Professional Organizations
Osifo stated that PENGASSAN reviewed succession models used by various professional groups, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), to determine a more suitable approach. This process led them to adopt a system similar to ICAN's, where the senior vice-president automatically assumes the position of president once elected.Such a model was believed to balance and smooth out any internal tensions.
