Solo developer UndreamedPanic can’t wait to be done with Pokemon Gamma Emerald

The solo creator behind the fan-made Generation 3 remake, UndreamedPanic, has been working for 18 months to finish his project. With the early access release just out, he’s eager for a break after his marathon efforts.

UndreamedPanic personally coded and designed all systems, models, UI, music, and sprite animations, drawing over 384,000 frames of animation that were later compressed. Despite this intense labor, the reaction online has been mixed.

Developer defends against criticism

Pokemon Gamma Emerald faced initial dismissals as a simple mod on social media, but UndreamedPanic clarified: “Calling it a mod is literally dismissing all of that.” He spent 12-hour days for the last 18 months to finish the game.

Despite major optimizations reducing RAM requirement from around 12GB to under 4GB and allowing smooth runs on Steam Deck, the developer still faced backlash. “I was being sarcastic when saying things like ‘can’t wait to be done with the project’ but lots of people seem to be taking that out of context,” he wrote.

Behind the scenes

Developing for nearly two years, the project began as a solo endeavor. The last 18 months saw 12-hour days invested by UndreamedPanic. He hopes players will enjoy the game but plans to take some time off after the early access release.
