Despite Horrendous Start, New Zealand Zoe Hobbs Claims Gold In Glasgow
New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs set a Commonwealth Games record of 10.93 seconds to win the women's 100m title at the Glasgow Commonwealth Championships. Her victory was against all odds, with rain so heavy that Amy Hunt's fingernails were underwater during her second-place finish.
After an extremely poor start, Hunt had to dig herself out of a ‘horrendous ditch’ in the race’s first half. Hunt clocked 10.98 seconds for a silver medal. However, she insisted she brought home 'the most important thing' – a medal regardless of conditions.
Conditions So Bad Fingertips Were Underwater
Hunt faced extremely wet and challenging conditions in Glasgow. The start line was so slippery that her fingernails were submerged underwater as she prepared to race. Hunt described it as having 'a really, really terrible first 60m.' Despite the torrential rain hampering her early pace, she managed a remarkable comeback to take silver.
