Referees Call for VAR to Stick to Its Original Intent

UEFA and European Referees Want Video Assistant Referee Interventions Limited to 'Blatant Errors'

In a move aimed at clarifying the use of video assistant referees (VAR), leading refereeing officials from UEFA and across Europe agree that the technology should be reserved for only the ‘blatantly incorrect’ decisions.

At a recent meeting, these officials stated that lengthy VAR reviews must focus on clear errors or missed incidents. The goal is to return to the 'minimum interference - maximum benefit' philosophy originally intended when VAR was introduced in 2018.

The attendees acknowledged that microscoping decisions can often indicate that field referees made a 'clearly correct' call, thus limiting such interventions.
