Phil Salt Leads Welsh Fire to Victory Over Southern Brave

In the opening match of The Hundred 2026 season at Utilita Bowl in Southampton, Phil Salt guided Welsh Fire to a six-wicket victory against Southern Brave. Salt’s unbeaten 47 was crucial as Fire chased down 135 after being bowled out for 138.

Despite early wickets for both teams, Salt’s partnership with Joe Root and Rachin Ravindra kept Fire at the surface. Coming in to bat when required nine runs from five balls remained, Asa Tribe's timely hit followed by Salt's six secured the win for Welsh Fire.

On the other side, Southern Brave’s 135-7 was a strong performance but not enough against a disciplined Fire bowling unit led by Marco Jansen. David Miller struggled early in his innings but contributed with a 44-ball 44 at the end.

Salt is the all-time leading scorer in The Hundred having hit over 1,100 runs since 2022 and aims to guide Fire towards their first-ever title this season.

What does this victory mean for Welsh Fire?

This win is vital as Welsh Fire starts its journey aiming at the title. After finishing in last place in both men's and women's tables, this victory marks a positive start under Salt’s captaincy.

Salt plans to lead Fire towards success and believes a strong start can set the tone for the remainder of The Hundred 2026 season.
