Legendary Coach Questions Raducanu's Coach Change

Rick Macci, the former coach of Serena Williams who now questions Emma Raducanu’s decision to switch coaches after her US Open victory in 2021, raised eyebrows about her split with Andrew Richardson.

Raducanu, then an 18-year-old qualifier at the US Open, soared to win ten matches without dropping a set. Following this triumph, she surprisingly decided to part ways with Richardson—a move that Macci deems incongruous given the stakes involved.

Macci told Tennis365: “That made no sense back in the day, and I told everybody.” He added that factors like fame and fortune can cloud judgment during such high-pressure times.

Switches and Reunions

Since 2021's US Open, Raducanu has worked with five different permanent coaches as well as others on a trial or short-term basis. This June, she rehired Richardson and reached the final at the Queen’s Club Championships shortly afterward, only to miss Wimbledon due to injury.
