Kyle Shanahan Reveals He Was Using Autopilot When San Francisco 49ers Coach Crashed Car
Kent Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, recently opened up about a car accident that occurred on July 14. Speaking for the first time since the incident during San Francisco's training camp, Shanahan discussed the circumstances and his recovery progress. The accident resulted in multiple injuries including a concussion and three broken ribs.
During an earlier meeting with reporters, Shanahan had clarified that he was responsible for crossing into oncoming traffic, not the driver of the other vehicle. In his latest comments, he revealed that he was using the autopilot feature in his Tesla Model S at the time. The accident happened after he momentarily took his eyes off the road while trying to retrieve his phone.
Kyle Shanahan said, “Anytime you cause an accident that can be avoided, you feel pretty stupid, especially when you have a chance to hurt someone else. Who knows what happened when I turned around, whether [autopilot] malfunctioned or whether I knocked it off—I don't know yet. But regardless, it's always your fault. Whether you're on autopilot or not, you can't take your eyes off the road. It’s a partnership,” Shanahan elaborated.Why Did Shanahan Cut Back on Coaching Duties?
