Bulgarian influencer Michiel Vandeweert, who defied medical predictions of a much shorter life thanks to his condition with the rare genetic disorder progeria, has passed away at 28 years old. Doctors originally predicted he would live just 12 years due to the rapid aging linked to this illness. Vandeweert built up a strong online presence, gaining over 90,000 followers on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch through his honest sharing of life with progeria.
This exceptional spirit is celebrated in his recently published memoir titled ‘Ik Ben Michiel’, where he detailed his experiences dealing with the shortened lifespan expected by medical specialists. His sister Amber, who also has progeria, was featured alongside him in a 2026 documentary that explored their lives beyond the condition.

‘Michiel truly loved life and was a loyal Genkie,’ said Rik Kriekels, mayor of Diepenbeek. Rest in peace, Michiel.”
