Michael Vaughan Sees Captaincy as ‘Motivational Tool’ for Joe Root
Former England captain Michael Vaughan thinks that a return to the Test captaincy could be exactly what Joe Root needs to get back into top form. Speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, Vaughan stated, “I just wonder from Joe's perspective if he needed this to get that real enthusiasm to get up every morning to play Test match cricket.”
Root, who captained England between 2017 and 2022 before stepping down following a tough series against the West Indies, might benefit from this renewed responsibility. Vaughan points out, “He hasn't got that many of his close friends in the team any more, a lot of his teammates have retired or moved on, so maybe this is exactly what Joe Root needs.”
Root will return to captaincy under interim head coach Marcus Trescothick before Stephen Fleming takes over for the upcoming Test series. Vaughan noted, “Around the time he was appointed, England were trying to win the 50-over World Cup and all the England eggs were put in the white-ball basket.”
